It’s Difficult to Find a Good Part-Time Work Opportunity during Student Life. Here Are 15 Job Ideas for Students.
You know what drags you down, before you even get off the ground? DEBT.
About a third of American students borrow money to make it through college, and in 2020, the average student was almost $39,000 in the red – a record high – equating to roughly $1.6 trillion.
That… sucks, right? But today, we’re giving some students ideas as to how they can earn some cash while working to pay down their debt sooner.

As a student you must be tired of reading long articles. Switch over to the interesting video version of this text:
With that said, let’s get straight into the article.
1
Tutoring
If you’re a couple years into your studies, you could use your already-acquired knowledge to tutor those a year or two behind you. Or perhaps you were a math whiz in high school, you could help others struggling to grasp concepts that you could make sense of in your sleep.
Tutoring could earn you an average of $25 an hour, which is a sweet deal considering that you’ll also be learning along the way.
The Guardian affirms this by stating, “If you like teaching and know your university subject well, tutoring could be a good way to make money.”
2
TEFL
Teaching English as a Foreign Language is a great work opportunity for students to make money. With many platforms, you don’t even need a proper certificate – all you need is to be able to speak English.
Some sites allow users to video chat to practice conversation – which is pretty cool – because not only do you get to meet people from all around the world, but you earn money at the same time.
Of course, if you have the proper certification, you could have much more earning potential but if you’re happy to earn $10 an hour, set your own schedule and do it from home, then we’d totally recommend this.
But heads up – China recently banned all private tutors from giving online lessons.
According to Reuters, all for-profit tutoring has been banned for subjects on school curriculums in the country in an effort to ease the financial burden on families, with the goal of giving the lagging birth rate a nudge upward.
3
Dog Walking
Dog culture is real okay. People love their pooches and are willing to hand over some cash to keep them happy.
According to payscale.com, the average hourly rate of dog walking is about $15, and is actually a pretty lucrative gig.
Heads up though – owners who are willing to pay for this, are NOT going to hire someone who doesn’t have a genuine love for dogs.
As the dog-walker, you’ll need to ensure the dogs are always safe, played with, fed, watered and sometimes even give them medications.
Other than that, it’s a walk in the park.
4
House / Pet-sitting
Take your dog-walking job one step further and offer to pet-sit overnight, while the owners go and grab some R&R. Indeed.com confirms that “The average salary for a pet sitter is just over $12 per hour in the United States.”
House sitters earn a little less at $11.81 / hour.
It goes without saying that if you want to be recommended to look after more homes and pets, throwing house parties, trashing the place and not taking proper care of the animals, will not set you up for scoring new gigs in the future.
5
Grow and Sell Your Own Produce
This one will take a little forward thinking and planning, but if you can manage to turnover a decent harvest, you’ll be able to turn over a decent profit.
If you have a garden, start planting some vegetables, herbs or even a gooseberry bush or two, and either sell the produce to your fellow students or local community, or save on your grocery budget and use them to make things like pesto, jams or a nice garden salad.
If your thumbs are more black than green… Well, you can always study up on it! Growing your own fruits and veggies will serve you well in life… and the apocalypse.
In our Learning Mastery course, we actually guide you on how to effectively read faster, so you can brush up on your garden skills in record time – head to alux.com/learn and enroll today!
6
Transcriber
Ahh.. who doesn’t love a job option that doesn’t require pants or a bra…
This is a job you can do anywhere and any time… you just download audio recordings, transcribe them, and submit.
Keep in mind though, the tests to get the gig are pretty strict because there’s a lot of grammar and language rules that must be followed.
Also good to remember that your rate of roughly $25/hour isn’t referring to the time worked – instead it’s per hour of transcribed audio – with most jobs requiring about 4-8 hours of work, depending on audio quality and how fast you type.
7
Get Paid to Exercise… Seriously
Aluxers, there are several apps that will pay you to exercise but we’re just going to highlight one – Sweatcoin.
Sweatcoin is an App that you can download and it pays you to walk outside. The App has been featured in The Telegraph, Forbes and The Daily Mail, and is a cryptocurrency-based platform.
1,000 steps gives you 0.95 sweatcoins, which are capped at 20 a day. The money earned is paid into Paypal – but to receive $1,000, you would need to walk 21-million steps.. We’ll let you do the math on how long that would take.
8
Leverage Any Skill
What can you do well? Can you design? Then make stickers or t-shirts. Can you set up email and fix minor PC problems? Then offer that service to those that can’t. You don’t need a big budget to start these types of small business ideas from home.
See if you can advertise your services online, social media, your local bulletin boards or community chat group. People are often willing to help out when they know you’re out there putting in the effort to earn.
Here are a few skills all students should master, 15 Necessary Skills for Students in the 21st Century.
9
Transport Anyone
If you have a car, Aluxers, get those wheels turning and make some money. Help families out in the morning by dropping kids off at school, taking the elderly to the supermarket, or a person with a broken finger to the doctor.
Lift Apps are great, but can often be unreliable, the price fluctuates so much it’s hard to keep track – and they can sometimes be unsafe – so offer an alternative to your community and you’ll make some money every time you turn the ignition.
10
Waitering
Of course we can’t leave out the work that has literally paid off student loans for eons… waitering. It may not be the most glamorous job, but it’s quick cash in hand.
Servers are currently in high demand in the US; Covid hit the restaurant biz hard, a lot of people left their post waitering and opted for jobs with less risk, but with more people getting vaccinated, employment opportunities are a lot more available – a bonus, it’s a good job for students to learn confidence and how to work well under pressure.
11
Investing
Right, so investing isn’t going to make a student money right away, we know that. But even investing a tiny bit while you’re a student will work a long way as you get older.
If you can, use some of the earnings from previous suggestions and invest it. Bankrate.com agrees. They say, “college is actually one of the best opportunities to get started in the world of investing. Even those with only a little bit of cash can begin to build a portfolio, and it can actually be an advantage because you’ll be learning how to invest – and dealing with some inevitable losses – without the risk of losing a large sum of money.”
12
Sell Your Notes
If you’re the kind of student who takes pride in their note-taking and makes them look like a work of art, then this is a guaranteed way to make some cash without stressing to find the extra time.
This side hustle is legit and there are several sites we’ve looked into for you, including Course Hero, Nexus Notes, and Omega Notes.
13
Become a Walking Advertisement
We won’t sugar coat it, this job can be embarrassing, but who cares when it gives you cash in hand?
So, you might find yourself dressed up like a ketchup bottle, handing out coupons for a discount on the brand you’re wearing, or you might just have a poster attached to your back. If that’s what you’re doing – do it with enthusiasm and who knows what future employment offer could come of it? While you’re looking into this, see what you can find out about possibly branding your car and getting paid a monthly stipend for that.
14
Organize a Trip
Nope, you don’t need to be a certified travel guide to organize a trip. It could be a walking tour of the local artwork in your city – or guiding people on your favourite hiking trails… or get more creative with it and instead of a pub crawl, plan a day of hopping from one thrift shop to the next.
Get a group together, charge per person, and start banking the green.
15
‘Mortgage’ Your Future
There’s a new way that college students are raising money, and that’s by mortgaging their futures. This is an income share agreement – or ISA – whereby a company gives a student funding for school, in exchange for a portion of their future salary.
According to Investopedia, ISAs don’t accrue interest, they don’t need a co-signer nor do they need good credit. The market is quite unregulated at the moment, so if this is something you’re keen on, make sure to do your homework first.
