14. Fight Style and Power
Let’s face the fact here, MMA covers more skills and fight dimensions than boxing. No disrespect to all professional boxers, but that is what the Ultimate Fighting Championship is all about. Despite the controversies and Meryl Streep’s opinion that MMA is not the art, these fighters are hardworking athletes. And the way they utilize their skills inside the cage should be respected.
Jab, straight, hook, and uppercut. Those are Mayweather’s weapons of choice besides his amazing skill in reading his opponents’ movements. But that is what both of them have. And inside the cage of UFC fights, those punches are not enough.
No matter how deadly your knockout punch is, if that is your only move, sooner or later someone will figure out the way to bring you down. So, inside the cage, your whole body should be your weapon. Punches, kicks, take-downs, locks, and even chokes are the things you should master to survive the fight.
And those weapons are in McGregor’s possession. When you stand before him, you cannot tell what he’s going to throw at you. His fists are not the only thing you should worry about. He may not have the powerful knockout power like Mayweather does, but he has precision and timing.
“Precision beats power. Timing beats speed.” – The Notorious Conor McGregor
