Born in Knoxville, Tennessee as the son of David Chesney, a former elementary school teacher, and Karen Chandler, a hairstylist, but he grew up in Luttrell.

He attended Gibbs High School, where he played baseball and football and graduated in 1986.

Kenny received his first guitar as a Christmas present and started teaching himself how to play.

In 1989 he recorded a self-released demo album at the Classic Recording Studio in Bristol, Virginia.

An appearance at a songwriter’s showcase the following year led to a contract with Capricorn Records.

His first album, In My Wildest Dream, released in 1994 on the independent Capricorn Records label sold approx. 10,000 copies before the label closed its country music division.
