Lionel Richie is an American singer, songwriter, actor and record producer and his current net worth is $250 million.
Alberta R. (Foster), the wife of Lionel Brockman Richie, Sr., gave birth to their son in Tuskegee, Alabama. He spent most of his childhood on the campus of Tuskegee Institute.
He attended Joliet Township High School, East Campus. While there he became a star tennis player and accepted a tennis scholarship. After Joliet, he went to Tuskegee Institute but dropped out after his sophomore year.
In his teenage years he wanted to study divinity to become a priest with the Episcopal Church. Eventually changed his mind and opted to continue his musical career.
Part of the Kappa Kappa Psi, a national honor fraternity for band members, Lionel is also an active life member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.
While attending Tuskegee, he started a succession of R&B bands mid-1960s. Few years later he became a singer and a saxophonist with the Commodores.
In 1968, the band signed a recording contract for one record before signing with Motown Records. Motown Records offered them the deal to become a support act to The Jackson 5.
After that, the band became famous as popular soul group. Among their first several albums one could find danceable, funky sound. “Machine Gun” and “Brick House” are some of the songs.
A few years later, Lionel wrote and sang more romantic, easy-listening ballads such as Still, Easy and the tragic break-up ballad Sail On.
He even started to sell his songwriting to other artists such as Kenny Rogers for whom he wrote Lady and produced his album in the following year.
In duet with Diana Ross, they sang the theme song of Endless Love, in 1981. Released as a single, the song topped the Canada, Brazil and many other countries pop music charts.
It also became one of Motown’s biggest hits, with sales over 2 million copies.
After the success of the song Richie quit the Commodores, two years later.
His debut album, Lionel Richie, had three hit singles such as Truly, which had the same style that made him famous.
Later he continued with top hits You Are and My Love to establish himself as one of the most successful balladeers of the 1980s.
In 1985, Richie wrote and performed “Say You, Say Me” for the film White Nights, which became his most famous song.
Say You, Say Me won an Oscar for his efforts and reached number 1 on the US charts.
He also collaborated with Michael Jackson on the charity single “We Are the World” by USA for Africa, which became another #1 hit.
The success kept bigger and bigger and today Lionel is one of the richest singers in the world.
Since 2004, he has produced a total of six Top 40 singles in the UK.
