Common is an American hip hop recording artist, actor, poet and film producer and his current net worth is $50 million.
The son of educator Dr. Mahalia Ann Hines and former ABA basketball player Lonnie Lynn, born in Chicago, Illinois, is one of the richest rappers in the world.
At the age of six, his parents divorced and his mother raised him after his father moved to Denver. However, his father remained active in his life and during his teenage years he got Common a job with the Chicago Bulls.
While attending Luther High School South in Chicago, he with his friends started a trio that opened for big famous acts like N.W.A.
Growing up he went to Florida A&M University for two years after landed a scholarship, graduating in business administration.
After The Source magazine featured him in the Unsigned Hype column he released his first single, Take It EZ.
The same year he also released his debut album, Can I Borrow a Dollar?, under the stage name Common Sense.
After the release of his second album, the 1994 Resurrection, his fan base grew bigger, beyond Chicago natives.
The album received good critical acclaim as well as a strong positive reaction among the fans.
Produced by his long-time production partner, No I.D., who later became a mentor to the young Kanye West, the album would be No I.D.’s last production for Common.
Few years after he appeared on the Red Hot Organization’s compilation CD titled America is Dying Slowly. He appeared alongside Wu-Tang Clan, and Fat Joe, among many other famous artists.
The Source magazine declared the CD, released raise awareness of the AIDS epidemic among African-American men, a masterpiece.
The song “I Used to Love H.E.R.” from Resurrection ignited a feud with West Coast rap group Westside Connection.
Common and Westside Connection continued to insult each other, before finally meeting with Louis Farrakhan and setting aside their dispute.
In 1997 he released his third album, titled One Day It’ll All Makes Sense, which took two years to finish.
It included collaborations with famous artists like Q-Tip, Canibus, De La Soul, and many others.
Short after the release of his album, Common welcomed his first child, daughter Omoye Assata Lynn.
In 2011, Common launched Think Common Entertainment, his own record label imprint. Previously he has released music under various other labels such as Relativity, Geffen and GOOD Music, among others.
Apart from his hip hop career, he has also starred in films. Among the ones he starred in, includes Smokin’ Aces, Street Kings, Wanted, Terminator Salvation, New Year’s Eve, Run All Night, and John Wick: Chapter 2.
