Born in Kenosha, Wisconsin, he is the son of Marie Rose, a hairdresser and stylist, and Frank Lawrence Ruffalo, Jr., a construction painter.
Growing up, he went to both Catholic and progressive schools and had a happy childhood alongside his two sisters and a brother.
He did struggle with undiagnosed dyslexia and ADD as a child and as the young adult, but managed. He spent his teen years where his father worked in Virginia Beach.
