14. Hungarian refugee

Immigrating to England was not an easy thing for George Soros. He did not just move out of his country. He had to escape the threats in his own country. Soros was a refugee.

He came from a Jewish family. So, when the Nazi occupied Hungary when he was only a teenager, life became a nightmare. Knowing Nazi’s opposition Jews, his family bought papers stating they were Christians. That is how they survived the war. But Soros family didn’t want to take any risk.

They sent Soros to pose as Hungarian Ministry of Agriculture employee’s godson. He stayed hidden with the employee’s wife who is also a Jewish. And he waited and waited until he managed to escape the country in 1947. His parents followed him to New York City during the 1950s Hungarian Revolution.

Soros considers his father as a hero. The old man did not just save his son from the Nazi, but also many other Hungarian Jews. Even that today Soros is a billionaire who literally can buy anything he wants, he still thinks his happiest time is when he witnessed his father’s heroism.
