9. Black Fire 1 by Barnett Newman priced at $84.2 Million
This American artist is considered by many one of the abstract expressionism’s prominent figures.
Because of his humble beginnings as a writer of forewords and reviews for art catalogues, earned him a lot of credibility as an artist.
In 1948 he has had his first solo show; back then he was already making a name for himself in art business because of his use of what he called zip lines (thin vertical lines of color on plain backgrounds).
His works didn’t generate much income at the beginning, but by the 1980s, Newman’s works were among the most expensive art pieces.
The one that we believe a child could pull it off is Black Fire 1, which on May 2014 went for $84.2 million.
