Since we talked about Mark Rothko’s paintings is a good time to talk about the Most Expensive Pablo Picasso Paintings in the World.
Is not like the previous article when not many people knew who Mark Rothko is, is different because everybody knows Pablo Picasso.
Let’s take a look at Most Expensive Pablo Picasso Paintings in the World!
I’m not going to make a top though, but I’m going to say a few words about each painting.
Let’s just take them by period. By the period they were sold.
It was the year 1989 where three of Picasso paintings were sold.
“Au Lapin Agile” (1904), “Yo, Picasso” (1901) and “Pierrette’s Wedding” (1905)- this three paintings were sold for $40.7 million, $47.9 million and $51.3 million.
This is him, Pablo Picasso.
The “Au Lapin Agile” has a special story. This expensive Picasso painting was made in return for free meals at a famous cabaret in Monmartre.
“Yo, Picasso” was a self-portrait from the artist’s “Blue Period”. When the painting was sold it became the second most expensive artwork sold to that date.
He was in his “Blue Period” when he painted the “Pierrette’s Wedding” or “Les Noces des Pierrette”. The painting shows Harlequin blowing a kiss to the bride.
In 1997 the action house Christine’s sold a $48.4 million painting called “Le Reve” by Pablo Picasso. In this expensive painting you can see his mistress Marie-Therese Walter.
She is again asleep on a chair- just like in other painting called “La Lecture”. “La Lecture” is one of the most expensive Pablo Picasso paintings in the world. And after that one, the marriage of Picasso ended.
In 1999 and 2000 another two of Pablo Picasso paintings sell for $49.50 million (Femme Assise Dans Un Jardin) and $55 million (Femme Aux Bras Croises).
In “Femme Assise dans un Jardin” the Cubist style put a mark on it. The painting presents Dora Maar in a garden setting.
“The Woman with Crossed Arms” or “Femme Aux Bras Croises” is yet another painting he did in his “Blue Period”.
What is this “Blue Period’ you may ask?
The “Blue Period” is a term used to describe Picasso style during the 1901 and 1904 when he painted essentially monochromatic paintings in shades of blue and blue-green.
After this the last three paintings we are talking about today, were the most expensive paintings he ever did.
“Dora Maar Au Chat” sold for about $95.216 million in May 2006. Is also one of Picasso’s most iconic painting; and also one of the most expensive.
The other one is “Garcon A La Pipe” and the second most expensive painting by Picasso. It was paint by the artist when he was only 24.
It portraits a Parisian working boy who holds a pipe in his hand and wears a string of roses on his head, just like a crown.
And the most expensive Pablo Picasso painting in the world is “N***, Green Leaves And Bust” painted in 1932.
The painting is the most expensive painting to ever be sold at an auction.
Again, his mistress Marie-Therese Walter was his muse.
Is a nude to be more specific. A very expensive nude. He painted it in just one day and it represents a better phase of his life.By that time, he had become very skilled in his art and began to use symbolism.
