Most Expensive Fish in the World

The Most Expensive Fish in the World breaks all records!

We’ve done the fish tank, the fishing lure but we never talked about the actual fish- the most expensive fish in the world.

Although there are plenty of incredibly costly tropical fishes that are trading on the exotic markets, we looked around to find the fish with the highest price ever paid by someone! And yes we did it!

Well, luckily for every sushi lover out there, the fish in question is a tuna. A 222-killogram bluefin tuna to be more specific!

This extra large fish was sold in the Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo, Japan! Every time new fish comes in, representatives of the biggest restaurants in the world come around and sample the merchandise.

Often, real bidding wars start on limited products and that’s exactly how this tuna came to be the most expensive fish in the world acknowledged by the World Record Academy.

Sold at the Annual New Year Auction in Japan for the record amount of $1.8 Million, the big fish made a new record for the priciest fish to ever be purchased!

At $8.000 per kilo, this particular tuna was valued at eight times the price of silver.

The buyer paying the insane amount for the world’s most expensive fish is chef Kiyoshi Kimura who admitted the price was a bit high in the end but he did it as an investment and bringing even more people to his restaurant. And it worked, we had to feature him on our Most Expensive Column!

By the time you’re reading this the giant tuna is already consumed by those that visited Sushi Zanmai restaurant. You could have gotten a piece of the most expensive tuna in the world for about $24 bucks for a piece.

Did you know? The Japanese consume up to 80% of the world’s declining tuna stock, so it simply made sense that the transaction to occur here.

The tuna was caught of Oma, Aomorion the northern tip of Japan’s main island Honshu.

The former (and second) most expensive fish in the world was sold for only $646,000 so unless an even bigger bluefin tuna will be caught and auctioned off in the near future we expect the current title to sit where it is.

It’s been over 3 years since the fish was auctioned off and we have yet to see another that even comes close to this one.

This ends our cover of the world’s most expensive fish to ever be sold! Now, who’s hungry for sushi?
