With that done, let’s bounce back to the article.
1
Greenery
Before you skip this part, hear us out. You do not need to have a green thumb to add greenery to your space. We promise. And yes, you’ve probably had a bad experience with an orchid or two or been given a bonsai and just knew that the poor guy wasn’t going to make it.
We recommend a Delicious Monster, which is seriously low maintenance. What we further love about the DM, is that you can cut off it’s beautiful big leaves and place them in a vase in other parts of your home. They last forever in a vase and look exquisite.
Snake Plant, Pothos and Peace Lilies are also hard to kill, and when you’ve gained a bit of green confidence, before you know it, your whole home will look green, beautiful and luxurious.
And, if all else fails, Aluxers… you could always opt for greenery of the… fake variety. There are so many different varieties of potted “plants” and faux palm trees that would liven up any dreary corner you might have – and an added bonus… they won’t die when you go on vacation.
2
Books
If you have books piling up on the bed-side table, on the floor, on every spare counter-top – then it’s time to get them organized and arranged in such a way that they add a touch of luxury to your home and not the reverse.
Books are such an important addition to any home, with The Guardian adding that “Growing up in a home packed with books has a large effect on literacy in later life – but a home library needs to contain at least 80 books to be effective.”
A simple trick to begin with, which costs nothing, is to colour-code your books and then add them to rooms that match a similar colour theme. Otherwise, nabbing a few crates for next to nothing and using them to store books, adds a wonderful, rustic feel to any space.

Artwork
Pablo Picasso once said, “Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” Your home should have pieces of art that bring you a sense of calm, serenity, joy, love, luxury, inspiration and excitement.
It doesn’t matter what emotion a piece brings you, because it’s something so personal that it doesn’t need to be explained to anyone else.
Add a gallery wall or place your pieces on shelves stacked up next to each other, or leaning against a wall on the floor… even if it’s Live, Love, Laugh – if you love it – display it!
4
High Quality Hand-Soap
Aluxers, there is nothing better than going into someone’s bathroom and realizing they have a Jo Malone handwash. Suddenly, your desire to use the bathroom and wash your hands has increased 10-fold.
And while we’re not suggesting you rush out and buy a $40 plus-dollar soap, there are more affordable options that look just as luxurious and pretty, sitting on your bathroom basin.
Now, after a luxurious lather & rinse, you must have the next item on our list.
5
Fluffy Towels
Nothing says “I’m adulting perfectly fine, thanks” more than soft, fluffy towels. No need to break the bank and go and replace all your towels – if you must really choose just one towel to replace, let it be the one in the bathroom with the luxurious hand-soap.
Teamed up together, the fluffy – preferably white – hand towel and hand soap in your home are the epitome of luxury living… even if the rest of the house doesn’t quite match… yet!

6
Add an Accent Table
Take note Aluxers, we said accent table – not table to throw down all your s*it. The great thing about an accent table is that it can really draw focus away from other things you might not want attention paid to and rather have people discussing the items on the accent table.
You could have a beautiful rock you picked up while hiking through Lesotho, or a shell you found while diving off the coast of Dubrovnik. All these items are wonderful talking points, plus they’re always there to remind you of the beautiful times you had.
7
Add Cushions and Throws
Layering doesn’t just apply to your autumn and winter wardrobe; it also adds such a wonderful dimension to your living spaces.
You don’t even need to go out and buy brand-new cushions. You could simply replace the covers, or just move them around in such a way that they’re not just tossed haphazardly all over the show.
If you have a pretty blanket that’s folded away in the top of your closest, or perhaps something your gran crocheted years ago – haul it out and drape it beautifully over the sofa.
Like interior designer, Nate Berkus, once said “Your home should tell the story of who you are and be a collection of what you love.”
… and if what you love changes with the seasons – and your budget allows – source different decor and textile pieces that reflect the seasons and keep you smiling all year… just remember to keep things organized in storage or you’ll end up with a mess on your hands.

Switch the Handles
If you’re looking for a quick, inexpensive way of making your space more luxurious, we recommend changing the handles on your chest of drawers, your bedside tables or even the kitchen cupboards.
This is a quick, easy and inexpensive way of getting an instant facelift.
A switch from wooden to black, or vice versa, will catch your attention immediately and give your home luxury for less.
If you’d like to delve deeper into interior design, we suggest listening to Interior Design, The Best Beginner’s Guide For Newbies, Volume 1 by Simon Brake. 9
Soft Lighting
Lighting can make or break a mood a quickly. Too bright, and your guests will be worrying about their fine lines being visible to all and sundry, and too dim, you might accidentally put your hand on the wrong person’s knee…
So, good lighting is important.
Apartment Therapy recommends the following, “Include at least three sources of light in each room: General lighting (overhead or pendant), Specific lighting (task or table), and Ambient lighting (sconces, candles, or decorative).”
As you see, it’s not expensive and will add so much value to your living space.
10
Scents
While we all love our pets, kids and partners – lingering scents like wet dog, sweaty sneaker and bathroom bomb, are not high up in the scent selling department.
There are many ways for you to create a beautiful smelling home. You could add essential oils to your air filters, make your own room freshening spray, boil a mix of orange and lemon peels, pop dryer sheets in your trashcan and ensure your garbage disposal stays squeaky clean and smelling great.
There is nothing better than the luxury of coming into a home that smells fresh and clean.
