18. Burundi
The Republic of Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo are neighbors. Like most African countries, Burundi is a resource-poor country.
This country has one of the lowest governance rankings. The leaders of the leading parties in Burundi are regularly involved in corruption scandals.
It all started with the unfair wealth distribution. It didn’t just fuel corruption but also sparked conflicts. From 1993 to 2003, the country suffered from a civil war. This has increased corruption and favored the rise of an ethnically diverse oligarchy.
Burundi is ranked 150th in the Transparency International’s list with 21 score. It is tie with Zimbabwe and Cambodia. Overall, Burundi is getting better considering its score in 2012 was 19.
