Cal “The Iron Man” Ripken played for 21 seasons, spending his whole career with the Baltimore Orioles, and was voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame with 98% of the vote in 2007.
In 1984, Ripken secured the highest contract the Orioles had ever given, worth $1 million. And has continued to break records and make a great impression on crowds. He had the highest batting average of his whole career in 1999, at .340.
Ripken contributes to charitable causes regularly, and has done throughout his career, including the Baltimore School for Performing Arts, an adult learning centre which he founded with his wife, and support for research into Lou Gehrig’s disease, also known as ALS or motor-neurone disease.
