13. Honda “The Cog” – $6.5 million
Next up is a commercial from Japanese automaker, Honda. This one was from 2003. We start to see a pattern which may be a clue for us in this list. These costliest commercials were made in early 2000s, before viral branding became viral itself.
When you look at this particular commercial, you would think that it was completely computer generated. The truth is that it was all manually constructed. Two continuous takes were made to form this remarkable video. However, to get to those two perfect takes, it took more than six hundreds failed takes. That is persistence and patience, right there.
Initially made for the UK market, this exclusive TV commercial was in fact successful all across the world. With such amazing effort to make, that should come as no surprise, though.
The whole commercial is about Honda car parts working together in a sequence. There is no line spoken throughout the entire ad sequence but one sentence: “Isn’t it nice when things just work?”
