Nas is an American rapper, record producer, actor, and entrepreneur and his current net worth is $52 million.

Born in Brooklyn, New York to his father Olu Dara, a jazz and blues musician and his mother Fannie Ann Jones, a Postal service worker, he has one sibling, a brother named Jabari Fret.

His brother is a member of the hip-hop group, Bravehearts and knows as the Jungle.

His father gave him his name Olu Dara from the Yoruba people.

Growing up his family had to move to the Queensbridge Houses in the Long Island City neighborhood of Queens.

Willy III Will Graham, his neighbor, influenced his interest in hip-hop music by playing him records.

He dropped out of school after eighth grade and before that, his parents divorced.

Nas educated himself about the African culture through the Five Percent Nation and the Nuwaubian Nation.

As a teenager he started writing his own rhymes and played the trumpet. Before going as Nas for his stage name, he used to have Kid Wave as the nickname.

He met with producer Large Professor and went to the studio where Rakim and Kool G Rap recorded their albums.

Nas used to go into the booth and record his own material, but never released anything, when Rakim and Kool G Rap weren’t there.

In 1991, Nas performed on Main Source’s “Live at the Barbeque” and a year later MC Serch of 3rd Bass approached him.

He had a record deal for Nas and during the same year, he signed him with Columbia Records.

Nas released the single Halftime under the name of Nasty Nas, from MC Serch’s soundtrack.

His rhyming skills attracted a lot of attention within the hip-hop community who saw him as the new Rakim.

In 1994 he released his debut album, Illmatic, awarded best album of 1999 by The Source.

The album, produced by Large Professor, Pete Rock, and many more, had several singles including The World is Yours.

About.com ranked Illmatic as the greatest hip-hop album of all time. The Prefix magazine praised it as “the best hip-hop record ever made”.

In 2016 he received the Jimmy Iovine Icon Award at the REVOLT Music Conference for having a big impact and unique influence on music.

In 2017 Nas released the song Angel Dust as soundtrack for TV series The Getdown.
