Russell Simmons is an American entrepreneur, producer and author and his current net worth is $400 million.
Born in Queens, New York to his father, a public school administrator and his mother a New York City park administrator, Russell has two brothers.
After graduating from August Martin High School, he attended the City College of NYC for a while. There he met DJ/Bboy, Kurt Walker, who influenced him to get involved in the hip-hop phenomenon.
Simmons knew that hip hop would become his career after he heard Eddie Cheeba perform at Charles’ Gallery in Harlem.
Since there he is the CEO of Rush Communications and co-founded the hip hop music label Def Jam Recordings in 1983.
His company, Rush Communications has over ten businesses and three non-profits organizations included.
Apart from that he also created the clothing fashion lines Phat Farm, Tantris Simmons, and Argyleculture.
Along with his partner, Stan Lathan, he produced a TV series HBO’s Def Comedy Jam, Def Poetry Jam. Currently they still have a development deal with HBO.
In 1985 he co-produced and starred in a movie called Krush Groove. A few years later he co-produced The Nutty Professor, starring Eddie Murphy.
He is also the co-founder of RushCard, a prepaid debit card provider.
Russell married Kimora Lee in 1998, whom he met in 1992. Together they have two daughters, Ming Lee and Aoki Lee. The couple divorced in 2006.
Since 1999 Russell is vegan and an avid supporter of Farm Sanctuary, an organization working to end the cruelty to farm animals.
In 2009 he received the title of Goodwill Ambassador for the UN Slavery Memorial at the United Nations to honor the victims of slavery.
He received the 2001 PETA Humanitarian Award and the 2011 Person of the Year Award from Ethical Treatment of Animals.
He is also a longtime supporter for gay rights and encourages marriages equally.
In 2011, when the retail corporation Lowe’s withdrew funding from the show All-American Muslim, after which he promised to pay the Learning Channel for any revenue lost.
