Born in Manhattan, New York City from Elizabeth Inglis, an actress, and Sylvester Pat Weaver, the NBC executive.

She went to Ethel Walker School, a girls’ preparatory school in Connecticut, to The Chapin School and The Brearley School. Later on going to Sarah Lawrence College and graduating with a B.A. in English from Stanford University, where she started acting. In 1974 she earned a Master of Fine Arts from Yale University School of Drama.

In a school’s production, she played alongside Meryl Streep and appeared in the off-Broadway comedy Beyond Therapy in 1981.

She started using her stage name Sigourney Weaver after a minor character in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby.
