Oscar de la Renta Gets His Own Avenue in New York

Oscar de la Renta Gets His Own Avenue in New York

Ladies and gentlemen, it’s official: Oscar de la Renta street is coming to the Big Apple!

On Tuesday evening, February 10th, at the home of Made Fashion Week in Manhattan the huge news was spread!

The Mayor Bill de Blasio walked on the podium together with his beloved wife, Chirlane McCray, an made the announcement: New York City is naming a street after Oscar de la Renta!

The award-winning designer and one of the biggest legends in the world of fashion tragically passed away on October 20, 2014. But now, when New York City is beginning a new chapter in 2015, it takes the story of Oscar de la Renta further and shows him that he’s not been and never will be forgotten. People will see his name on the streets everyday or as the mayor says:

He will forever be ingrained in the fabric of the city

Although the bill that renames the public spaces in the city doesn’t say where the designer’s street is going to be found and the mayor also kept it a secret, at least we know that it has already been signed on February 5.

Apparently de Blasio is paying more and more attention to the fashion scene as he made another important announcement: the fund offered to the city’s fashion industry will go up to $15 million compared to $5 million which is right now. He wants to stand for the industry:

in every phase of the production cycle, from the first creative idea to the garments being loaded onto the truck

And he’s making a smart move because as we’ve learned, the fashion industry is a huge part of NYC and bring a major contribution to the economy as it’s providing the city $2 billion in tax revenue and 180,000 people with $11 billion in wages.

And the mayor also recognizes the Oscar de la Renta‘s part in making all this possible, admitting that he was a:

giant of the industry and no one is more deserving than him of that

Bill de Blasio also quoted the designer in order to sum it up and draw the conclusions of the speech:

The great thing about fashion is that it always looks forward

And to make it even more memorable, he ended it with a loud:

Can I get an amen?

What do you think about the mayor’s decision?

Where do you think the street is going to be located?
