Brian Rafalski famously struggled to get onto an NHL team, playing for teams in the European Leagues for four seasons instead. Sporting News even named him “the best hockey player in the world not playing in the NHL”.
Rafalski was finally signed by the New Jersey Devils in 1999, and proved to be a valuable defensive player. Despite his initial struggles to enter the NHL, he officially signed a massive $30 million contract with the Detroit Red Wings, and set a career high for the number of goals, becoming one of the richest hockey players in the world in the process.
