1

2002 Maserati Spyder

It was the 2002 Maserati Spyder that ended the deafening silence of more than 10-years of the Maserati in the US market, and they came back with a start.

Classic Cars says that this model is… “entitled to be considered among the most important and significant ones in the history of the brand.”

Jalopnik had one advertised for $13,900, which is a great price – but on average, you can pick up one of these two-seat convertible roadsters for around $20k.

There are certain qualities and attributes to this vehicle that make it remain stylish. Do keep in mind though, a car that is nearly 20-years old is going to have some issues – but it’s all factored into the sweet price tag, and the even sweeter ride.

2

2005 Jaguar S-Type R

If 20k is still way out of your budget, you might consider this one – a 2005 Jaguar S-Type R for around $9,000.

When it comes to Jaguars, whether you’re a fan or not, there is no denying that their looks are classic. This model was first showcased in 1998, and production began in 1999 and continued until 2008. The model underwent a facelift in 2005.

It’s an executive notchback saloon which according to one happy driver is a triumph of engineering, and “designed for those who have enough experience with cars to appreciate all that it offers. Holds the road like glue.”

You may not find one right away, because they’re snapped up fast, but keep your ear to the tarmac… you might be driving off in one sooner than you think.

3

Porsche Boxster

Porsche has been around for 90 years, and they’ve had some real wins in terms of design and function, and will always hold the title for making the only real everyday super-car, according to hotcars.com.

The Boxster was the result of the financial difficulties Porsche experienced in the 90s, which paved the way for more people being able to own their own piece of the iconic brand.

It was Wendelin Wiedeking, who was credited for improving Porsche’s finances and how the vehicles were manufactured. When he became CEO of the struggling company in 1992, he revolutionized the efficiency during manufacturing, and when the Boxer was introduced, Porsche sales nearly quadrupled.

According to Car Guru, a Porsche Boxster S cost roughly $50,000 in 2000. You can pick up a base model for around $5,000, which is a small amount to pay for the name that says it all.

4

Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit

What if we told you that for under $10,000, you could drive away in a piece of history? At first, it might be tricky to explain to your friends that you are genuinely still broke yet are driving around in a Rolls-Royce.

The Silver Spirit is a luxury vehicle which also comes in a long-wheel base, a THM 300 3-speed automatic gearbox and a 6.75-liter L410 V8 engine. The Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit long-wheel base is iconic because it was the first to feature the retractable Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament.

The inside is bespoke, the finishes luxurious and the ride, unbelievable… and all of that for less that $10,000.

There’s a great quick listen available on Audible called James W. Packard Created the American Rolls Royce, which we highly recommend you listen to. Remember to claim your free download by heading to alux.com/freebook.

5

Vaydor G35

For a few thousand more, if you’re not keen to go super classic like the Silver Spirit, you might find the Vaydor a little more in line with your tastes.

At first glance, you wouldn’t think that it would be as cheap as $15,000 – especially since this car has been driven by NBA stars and made an appearance in Suicide Squad… you may remember the Joker drove a candyfloss pink one with white leather seats. Lucky guy, Jared Leto.

The Vaydor G35 is, in reality, an Infiniti G35 with the Vaydor body kit. The cost of the Infiniti is roughly $4k and you replace the body with the Vaydor kit, which is around $11k.

Besides turning heads, this car also has rear-wheel drive, a 280 HP V6 engine and you can choose between automatic, 6-speed manual, or paddle shift transmission.

Remember, this is a DIY kit, so if you want to buy one fully assembled, you’re going to need so shell out quite a bit extra. The sense of achievement after assembling your rags to riches car, will be worth it.

6

Range Rover Evoque

Landies are more than just an SUV, they’re a status symbol.

Judge Dredd, a 1995 American science fiction action film, predicted that by 2139 Land Rover will be the only car manufacturer left in the world. And quite honestly, if we were in a position of needing to cross The Cursed Earth on the way to Mega-City One, then we’d prefer to be in a Land Rover of some sort.

We digress, so back to the Range Rover Evoque. If you look hard enough, it is possible to pick up a 2-door Evoque for $16,000. That’s a fraction of what you’ll pay for a new one – and you’ll look like you’ve got money to spare!

7

2007 Nissan 350Z

Car Magazine calls this car “a d*mn fine sports car,” and they’re right. It boasts six-speed manual, rear-wheel drive, and 306 hp.

For a mere $8,000, this little gem could be yours. Added bonus, this was the year that Bluetooth was added to the range, so you’d be connected from the get-go.

The hood of the vehicle has a bulge to it, mimicking the 240Z, which accommodates the raised deck height of the new VQ35HR.

You can pick up a young looking 2007 model for between $8 and $10k.

8

Tesla Model S

We won’t hide the fact that if you’re going to find a Tesla that’s in the 20k market, the mileage is going to be exponentially high.

But if you look past that, it is possible to find a second-hand one that looks good and won’t let you down for many beautiful miles.

The Tesla S had a make-over in 2021, but the OG is still a beaut. When it was first launched, Consumer reports mentioned that… “This car performs better than anything we’ve ever tested before. Let me repeat that: Not just the best electric car, but the best car. It does just about everything really, really well.”

Add to that, in 2019, Motor Trend named the 2013 Tesla Model S, the ultimate “Car of the Year” over the magazine’s entire 70-year history, according to Wiki.

So Aluxers, don’t give up the search if this is what you want to drive, because with patience and putting the feelers out, you can pick up for around $20,000.

9

Chevrolet Corvette C5

This is the follow up to Chevrolet’s C4, with significant improvements. The hydroformed box frame meant an improved structural platform and the relocation of the transmission meant better handling.

This model is made from SMC or Sheet Molded Composite, which is fibreglass mixed and bonded with plastics. This helps the car look good for longer, as it provides excellent protection to the exterior of the vehicle.

Grabbing a second hand one will cost between $6,000 and $8,000 and you’ll be coasting along with your iconic Corvette badge sooner than you think.

10

2010 Jeep Liberty Sport

Jeep has been a bit of a trendsetter… wait, wait… hear us out. For example, the 1963 Jeep Wagoneer has been referred to as the first “luxury SUV.” Autoraptor.com confirms that it boasted… “the first independent front suspension and automatic transmission in a 4X4 vehicle, the first overhead-cam six-cylinder truck engine, and the first automatic full-time 4WD system.”

The thing with Jeep is that its name alone makes people think wealth. So, driving one will do your reputation good.

This particular model can be snapped up for around $5,000 – but we literally mean snapped up, because that is cheap and the car overall, can still go the distance – on and off road.

Question:

What can you add to our cheap cars that make you look rich? We’d love to hear from you.
