12. Stanford Mausoleum (Estimated Cost: $2.3 million)
You may know the Stanford University as one of the top institutes in the United States. But do you know that in the northwest part of the campus lie the remains of its founder and family?
Leland Stanford was the Governor of California in 1863. When his 15-year-old son died in 1884 from typhoid fever, he dedicated his life to honor his late son. He told his wife that the children of California should be their children. Thus, he founded the university.
The Stanford University is actually named Leland Stanford Junior University after. Now, he and his wife’s remains lay alongside his son’s in the mausoleum. The cost of building this mausoleum was $100,000 in 1889. That is approximately $2.3 million today.
Every Halloween, the Stanford University students throw a party here from 10 o’clock in the evening of last Friday or Saturday of October.
