12. No Building Taller than a Coconut Tree
Go ahead and explore the whole island of Bali. You will not find a single skyscraper. This has nothing to do with the city development or its economy. In fact, there are many international hotels and buildings here. Yet, they are not more than four stories tall.
The truth is that Balinese local authority forbids anyone to build anything taller than 15 meters in Bali. That is the average height of a coconut tree.
This policy is based on Balinese value of life. They believe that a coconut tree represents wisdom. And buildings built by humans represent power. Thus, the coconut tree and the building stand in contrary.
One should not have the exceeding power which may overrule the wisdom of life.
