We Ranked 15 Most Expensive Street Foods in the World

13. Very Important Pasty ($290)

The word “pasty” derives from Medieval French for a pie, filled with meat, vegetables or cheese. Pasty has been a part of British diet since 13th century. One particular pasty, Cornish pasty, is regarded as the national dish of Cornwall. And in Upper Peninsula of Michigan, pasty is an identifying cultural mark. It is a significant tourist attraction. They even have an annual Pasty Fest on every month of June.

Speaking of Cornish pasty, Chef Richard Shaw from Hampshire made the most expensive pasty in the world worth £230 ($290) last year. This pasty, which he called Very Important Pasty, was made for World Pasty Championship held in Cornwall.

He collected the best ingredients from some countries to create his pasty. Among them are Wagyu beef from Japan, potatoes from Illinois, flour from Netherlands, onions from France, swede from Scotland, and black pepper from India.

Chef Shaw made 3 pasties, one to be eaten before the competition as a tester, one for the competition, and another one to be auctioned for charity. Chef Shaw’s expensive pasty took home 4th place prize in the competition. And the auctioned pasty was sold at £117 ($147).
