The City Where Everyone Works and there is No Police, Actually Exists!

There is a place where everyone is happy and the things don’t matter. Called Marinaleda, the Spanish town and municipio of the province of Seville, Andalusia is the perfect city to live in.

Where is this place?

Located at an altitude of 205 meters and lies 108 kilometers east of the provincial capital, Seville, Marinaleda is part of the comarca of Estepa.

The history of the place is quite simple. The first indication of human settlement in the territory goes back to the late Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods, about 5,000 years ago.

Why is there no police?

Today, it is a city where everyone works, and with virtually no police, crime or unemployment. The Spanish town described as a democratic, socialist utopia.

There is no unemployment, and in Andalusian village in southern Spain that is prosperous thanks to its farming cooperative.

This Spanish town is like no other from its region. The surrounding countryside is made up for rolling green hills, miles of olive plantations and golden fields of wheat stretching in the horizon.

The city is quiet, beautiful and a typical Andalusia place, that is Spain’s poorest and most southerly province.

The best part about this city?

Marinaleda is a democratic, anti-capitalist village with a great mayor who actively encourages shoplifting.

Ever since 2008, when the financial crisis began, Marinaleda became famous among the other cities mostly because their mayor Juan Manuel Sánchez Gordillo, who is known for being ‘The Spanish Robin Hood’.

He got his name after organizing and carrying out a series of supermarket raids in a direct action protest last year.

There, the basic aliments such as oil, rice and beans were loaded into carts, wheeled from the store and taken out to a local food bank to help the needy, while the helpless cashiers just stood there, some of them even cried.

After the event, the mayor, Gordillo, said it was not theft, but a non-violent act of rebellion.

“There are many families who can’t afford to eat,” he argued. “In the 21st century this is an absolute disgrace. Food is a right, not something with which you speculate.”

Due to bank foreclosures, in this province alone are 690,000 empty properties, but not in Marinaleda, because their mayor came up with the best solution of the all: anyone who wants to build their own house can do so, for free.

All the materials and qualified people are provided by the mayor, and the generous allowance of 192 square meters will make anyone to want a house.

For everyone to afford the living in the city, the mayor has introduced a tax of just 15 euros ($19), per month that people must pay for the rest of their lives with the agreement that the house can’t be sold for private gain.

How is that possible?

The unemployment for Andalusia stands at 37%, but the situation in Marinaleda is different. From a population of 2700, the city has virtually full employment through the town’s farming cooperative, where laborers earn equal wages of 1200 euros per month.

“We need to rethink our values, the consumer society, the value we place on money, selfishness and individualism,” Gordillo remarks. “Marinaleda is a small example, and we want this experience to extend throughout the world.”
