This Hermes White Birkin Bag Just Became the Most Expensive Handbag Ever Sold at Auction
The Hermes white Birkin bag just sold at an auction and became the most expensive handbag ever sold at auction.
Sold to an anonymous buyer, this Birkin bag just became the priciest bag ever sold.
The white Himalaya crocodile diamond Birkin bag just sold at Christine’s auction in Hong Kong.
The priciest handbag, designed from Niloticus crocodile features 240 diamonds encrusted on its 18-karat-gold hardware.
The anonymous buyer got the bag after 15 minutes of intense bidding.
Last year, around the same time, Christine auctioned a similar bag for $300,000, a record at that time.
The two bags look nearly identical to the normal eye, but an expert would notice the subtle differences.
For example, the one sold recently has higher grade diamonds and features more gold.
The experts consider Birkin bags to be the ultimate status symbols, typically reserved for famous and wealthy people.
The auction house estimates that only one or two are made each year.
It is difficult to purchase one, even if you have a lot of money due to their rarity. So it’s understandable why the bags sold are so expensive.
The Himalayan is so-named because the coloring resembles the famous mountain range, and it’s “possibly the rarest and most desirable handbag in the world,” according to Hermès expert Jane Finds.
Hermes’ first Birkin bag, inspired by style icon Jane Birkin came to the market nearly 30 years ago.
Birkin, who is now 70, recently told the BBC she rarely uses the bag. She said that she often overfills the bag, making it “very heavy.”
Remember that she asked the brand to remove her name from the bags due to the cruel practices used to kill the crocodiles to make the bags.
Which celebs own the Hermes’ Birkin bags?
Victoria Beckham, who has a net worth of $550 million, also has an enormous collection of Birkin bags, got a special one from her husband, David Beckham.
The former footballer, who has net worth of $500 million, paid a reported $100,000 for an albino Nilo crocodile Himalayan Birkin bag in 2008.
“Hermès only very rarely—and very thoughtfully—creates unique pieces of this caliber,” says Finds.
