Macklemore is an American rapper and his current net worth is $24 million.
Born as Benjamin Hammond Haggerty, Macklemore is the son of Bill Haggerty and Julie Schott, and one of two boys of the couple.
He grew up with his brother, Tim in Seattle, Washington; hip-hop first came into his life at six years old when he started listening to Digital Underground.
At 15 years old he started writing lyrics and started to sign after he listened to a ‘lot of East Coast underground hip-hop.”
He became interested in reaching a younger generation through his music, which made him sign in a program focused on education and cultural identity, where he facilitated music workshops.
The young artist attended Garfield High School and Nathan Hale High School, where he came up with the stage name “Professor Macklemore” for an art project, involving a made-up superhero.
How did Macklemore start his career?
While at Garfield, he started a hip-hop group called Elevated Elements with some of his classmates. The group released their first album, titled Progress in 2000.
A few years later, he attended The Evergreen State College from where he earned a bachelor’s degree.
Before college, he used to record mixtapes under the name Professor Macklemore and distributed them himself.
Later, he started working on his first official full-length album, called The Language of My World, under the stage name Macklemore.
The first single from the album featured singer Evan Roman, with Budo producing it.
In 2006, he met his future collaborator Ryan Lewis, with whom he will release two albums as Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. But before they got into the music business, Lewis used to spend a few years working on Macklemore’s promotion as a photographer.
Then the two would become good friends but would not work together until a few years later.
Meantime, Macklemore worked as a solo artist, appearing on various tracks and performing at a music festival.
His second mixtape, The Unplanned Mixtape, released in 2009, reached No.7 on the iTunes Hip-Hop chart.
After the success of the mixtape, he started his collaboration with Ryan Lewis and began releasing the EP The VS. EP, Irish Celebration, among others.
How did Macklemore get famous?
The duo’s first single, Thrift Shop reached #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, as well as dubbed by Billboard as the first song since 1994 to top the Hot 100 chart without the support of a major record label.
Their second single, Can’t Hold Us, also peaked at #1 on the Hot 100 chart, making them the first duo in the chart’s history to have their first two singles both reach the #1 position.
Then it came with the release of The Heist in 2012, an album which debuted on the U.S. Billboard 200 at #2.
From the album, “Same Love: became the top hit and the two started The Heist World Tour to promote it.
For their work, the duo won four Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist.
