10. MICHAEL BLOOMBERG – Net Worth: $35.5BILLION
Now he is 72 years old and he is the owner of 88% of Bloomberg L.P., the global financial data and Media Company.
The American business magnate, politician and philanthropist is ranked at #10 on the Richest People in America according to Forbes magazine.
But he wasn’t always one of the richest men on the planet. He started as a general partner at Salomon Brothers, a bulge-bracket Wall Street investment bank.
But soon after Salomon Brothers was bought, Bloomberg had the opportunity to set up a new company from $10 million, the severance package the Salomon Brothers had offered him. And so the Innovative Market Systems was created.
He had this crazy idea, what you might call a business plan. His plan was based on the realization that Wall Street was willing to pay for high quality information. But somehow this crazy idea worked and soon the company became Bloomberg L.P.
In the 1990, the company was so big that had to install 8,000 terminals. And over the years they expanded into Bloomberg News, Bloomberg Message and Bloomberg Tradebook.
But Michael Bloomberg is not only a businessman and the creator of a global financial data, he is also the man who left the CEO position to pursue a political career as a major of NYC.
He did managed to serve as the 108th Mayor of New York City, and stood there three consecutive terms, beginning with his first election in 2001.
Now, it has a net worth estimated at $35.5 billion.
