N7. Los Zetas Cartel has Elite Gunmen formed from Former GAFE soldiers
The US government thinks that Los Zetas is the ‘most technologically advanced, sophisticated, and dangerous cartel in Mexico.
They named it that way because Los Zetas is a cartel formed of former soldiers from GAFE, an elite-special-forces unit in Mexico.
Back in 1999, the leader of the Gulf Cartel was looking for extra muscle and reached out to an old friend who was a retired Mexican army lieutenant with connections to GAFE.
That person bribed 30 men to desert the army and provide the muscle Gulf Cartel needed.
Then in 2010, the elite soldiers broke from the Gulf Cartel and formed Los Zetas. That’s for you to make an idea of how dangerous those people are.
Los Zetas has since expanded its territory to 11 Mexican states, making it the largest cartel in Mexico.
