14. How did he start it all?
Unlike most businessmen, Carlos didn’t study business in college. In fact, he has a civil engineering degree. But once he graduated, he took economics courses. Then, he started his career as a stock trader. Even though he inherited $3 million from his father, Carlos still works hard. Oftentimes, he worked fourteen hours a day.
From the profit he earned as a stock trader, he built his own brokerage called Inversora Bursatil. While gaining more and more profit, he started building Grupo Carso from buying companies from all kinds of fields.
During the Mexican monetary issues in the 1980s, he bought more and more troubled companies at low price. Later, he resold them at highly profitable prices.
And he hit the jackpot when Mexico privatized its telecom industry. He snatched the deal and acquired Telmex from Mexican government. Now, he owns pretty much everything in Mexico’s business. We’ll discuss about this on the following pages.
