Pink Star, the most expensive diamond in the world, has smashed auction records when it was someone purchase it the other day! Find out how much money it was worth!
The 59.6-caract diamond was sold to a jewelry retailer in Hong Kong, for a whopping $71.2 million!
The Pink Star diamond is officially the most expensive gem or jewel sold at auction, selling for a world record price.
It suppressed the previous record of $57.5 million held by the Oppenheimer Blue, which was sold a year ago at another auction.
The collectors were battling for this diamond, which had a price start of 44 million Hong Kong dollars, about $56.62 million, and stopped after a bidder on the phone offered to pay $71.2 million.
Before it was sold to the Hong Kong bidder, the gemstone was first sold for $83 million at Sotheby’s Geneva in 2013, a number that remains the highest ever for a diamond to this day.
However, the consortium of buyers, led by diamond cutter Isaac Wolf, reneged on the purchase. It stayed in Sotheby’s possession, until this sale.
The jewel is graded as Type IIa, which is a rare form for any pink diamond, much less one of its size and color.
Originated from a 132.5-carat rough mined by De Beers in 1999, the diamond was cut and polished for over two years.
At 59.60 carats, the Pink Diamond was the largest polished diamond ever to go on the auction block, even larger than the previously largest pink diamond, which was sold for $46.2 million in 2010.
The auction house wrote “a new chapter in its story by offering it for sale in Hong Kong, now a global epicenter for the world’s wealthy,” said Tobias Kormind of 77 Diamonds, an online diamond jewelry seller.
