12. Westin Hotel’s Bagel ($1,000)
The origin of bagel is obscured but it was first mentioned in Jewish community ordinances in Krakow, Poland back in 1610. In medieval Poland, the shape of bagel was believed to have magical powers. Its round shape brings good luck in childbirth and symbolizes longevity.
Now bagel is commonly found not just in Poland but many other countries like Japan, Russia, Germany, Turkey, England, and United States. And according to Chef Frank Tujague, executive chef of New York’s Westin Hotel, bagel is New York’s food landmark.
On November 2007, Chef Tujague launched the most expensive bagel in the world with $1,000 price tag. This bagel was topped with white truffle cream cheese and goji berry infused Riesling jelly with golden leaf. And as you can read in our world’s most expensive food article, white truffle came second.
This luxurious bagel was an exclusive offer, which was only available from November 6th until December 14th, 2007 and should be ordered within 24 hour notice. It was a part of the effort to help raise funds for Les Amis d’Escoffier Scholarship which provides scholarships to culinary art students.
