One of the Rarest Watches in the World, The Bao Dai Rolex Is Expected to Sell for $1.5 Million at Auction!

A news publication revealed that this watch will be put on sale on the upcoming Geneva sale, as one of the Philips offerings.
The word “grail watch” has been used often to describe the uniqueness of this triple calendar Rolex.
The sweet mix of black dial and diamond markers is the rarest configuration for a watch like this (6062), but the former owner of the unique piece only adds more value to the timepiece.
In 1954, the last Emperor of the Nguyen dynasty of Vietnam has bought the watch, and in 2002 was sold when the original owner’s family put it up for auction.
Back then, the timepiece sold for $235,000 and became the most expensive Rolex ever sold.
Fifteen years later, the same watch might break the record again, and reclaim the title, which currently belongs to a split-seconds timepiece.
The black dial Rolex Bao Dai is expected to sell for $1.5 million at auction.
Its uniqueness is increased because Rolex only produced two references with a triple calendar and moon-phase, with both made at the beginning of the 1950s.
And ever since both pieces have become extremely coveted, undoubtedly because of their unique looks, with the reference 6062 featuring these combinations in a traditional Oyster case while the other one, the reference 8171 went for a more angular case.
The crown logo had to be placed lower than usual, which resulted in the Chronometer line being placed just below the moon-phase.
These kinds of pieces make the today’s auctions to explode with so many collectors battling for the timepieces.
This May, the watch might become the most expensive Rolex ever sold, once again, after fifteen years.
And considering how rare this timepiece is, we might witness the highest bids ever made for a Rolex, after last year’s record.
