Viktor Vekselberg is a Ukrainian-born Russian businessman and his current net worth is $13.3 billion.
Born in Drohobych, Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, he is the son of a Ukrainian Jewish father and a Russian mother.
Growing up, he attended and graduated from the Moscow Transportation Engineering Institute.
Upon graduation, he used to work as an engineer and research manager at a pump manufacturer.
During that time when the Gorbachev administration allowed private business to be part of his new policy Perestroika and Glasnost, Vekselberg saw it as an opportunity to fund NPO Komvek.
The company he founded worked for the Irkuksk Aluminum Plant. Few years later he co-founded Renova Group together with his college classmate, Leonard Blavatnik.
KomVek owned 67% of Renova and Blavatnik’s company, Access Industries, owned the rest.
Thereafter, Vekselberg benefited financially from the privatization of the aluminum industry in Russia.
How did Victor Vekselberg get famous?
During the next period, he co-founded the Siberian-Urals Aluminium Company (SUAL) with the help of a merger between the Ural and Irkutsk Aluminum Plants.
With revenues from his aluminum business, he bought a minority interest in one of Russia’s largest oil and gas companies named Tyumen Oil (TNK).
After securing a controlling interest in Tyumen he became a member of the Board of Directors and a few years later he served as Chairman of the Board.
In the early 2000s, his company together with Leonard Blavatnik’s company, Access Industry, and the Alfa Group owned by Mikhail Fridman, German Khan, and Alexei Kuzmichov, announced a joined partnership. And this is how AAR consortium came to live.
In the same year, AAR merged with British Petroleum’s Russian oil assets in a 50-50 joint venture named TNK-BP. The venture became the largest private transaction in Russian history.
