Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to his father, Norton Cuban, an automobile upholsterer, and his mother, Shirley, grew up in the suburb of Mount Lebanon.
Raised in a Jewish working-class family, his maternal grandparents came from Romania, while his paternal grandparents came from Russia.
His first ‘business’ came at 12 years old, when he sold garbage bags to pay for a pair of expensive basketball shoes.
Cuban enrolled as a full-time student at the University of Pittsburgh, instead of finishing his last year of high school.
While at the university he joined Pi Lambda Phi International fraternity and had different jobs including a bartender, and disco dancing instructor.
After spending just one year at the University of Pittsburgh, he moved to Indiana University in Indiana.
He graduated from the Kelley School of Business in 1981, with a Bachelor of Science degree in management.
While in college he had owned various business ventures like a bar, disco lessons and a chain letter.
After moving to Dallas, Texas, in 1982, he first found a job as a bartender and then as a salesperson for Your Business Software.
With the support of his former customers from Your Business Software, and after the company fired him, he founded his own company, MicroSolutions.
Initially, the company sold software as well as a system integrator.
Few years later, Cuban sold his company to CompuServe, for $6 million, $2 million of which entered his pocket after taxes.
Chris Jaeb, and Todd Wagner started Audionet, which later became Broadcast.com, a company Cuban started investing in 1998.
The success of Broadcast.com came immediately and had already grown to 330 employees and $13.5 million in revenue for the second quarter.
In fact, the website helped launch the first live-streamed Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.
Still in 1999, during the dot com boom, Yahoo! purchased Broadscast.com, for $5.7 billion in Yahoo! stock.
He continues to work with Wagner through this day, in the 2929 Entertainment. The business provides vertically integrated production and distribution of films and videos.
The American businessman is now the owner of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks, as well as the chairman of the AXS TV.
He is also the main shark investors on the ABC reality TV series, Shark Tank.
As an author, he wrote an e-book titled How to Win at Sport of Business, in 2011. There he wrote about his life experiences in business and sport.
