J. K. Rowling is a British author, screenwriter, playwright and film producer and her current net worth is $1 billion.
Born in Yate, Gloucestershire, England to Peter James Rowling, a Rolls-Royce aircraft engineer, and Anne Rowling, a science technician, Joanne grew up to be one of the best-selling authors.
After they moved to the nearby village Winterbourne when she was four, Joanne attended St. Michael’s Primary School. She got her inspiration for Albus Dumbledore from her headmaster Alfred Dunn, for the Harry Potter books.
Growing up, she used to write fantasy stories which she read to her sister. At nine years old, her family moved to Gloucestershire village of Tutshill, close to Wales. While there, she went to Wyedean School and College.
According to Rowling, her teenage years were unhappy due to her home life being complicated by her mother’s illness and her “cold” relationship with her father.
She based her character in Harry Potter books, Hermione Granger on herself, at age of eleven.
After a year of studied in Paris, she moved to London to work as a researcher and bilingual secretary for Amnesty International.
After her work there, she moved to Manchester with her then boyfriend, and started working at the Chamber of Commerce.
While on a four-hour-delayed train trip from Manchester to London, the idea of a young boy attending a school of wizardry, “came fully formed” into her mind. She began writing once she got home.
By the time she wrote the first Harry Potter book, her mother passed away. She channeled her feelings of loss by writing about Harry’s own feelings of loss in so many details.
The following period, she experienced sad feelings, because of her mother’s dead, birth of her first child, divorce from her first husband and almost poverty.
But her books gained international acclaim and won multiple awards. The Harry Potter books sold more than 400 million copies, and still counting, becoming the best-selling book series in history.
They also made a series of films which she had overall approval on the scripts and maintained creative control by serving as a producer on the final installment.
Today she is the UK’s best-selling living author, with sales in excess of £238 Million.
