Tina Turner is an American-born recording artist, dancer, actress, and author, and her current net worth is $280 million.
Born as Anna Mae Bullock in Haywood County, Tennessee to Zelma Priscilla and Floyd Richard Bullock, she is of African-American descent.
During the World War II, when her parents relocated to Knoxville, she and her older sister grew up separately.
She had to live with her strict, religious parental grandparents, Alex and Roxanna, the deacon and deaconess at the Woodlawn Missionary Baptist Church.
After the war ended, the sisters reunited with their parents and moved to Knoxville.
Anna went to Flagg Grove Elementary School from first to eighth grade, after her family returned to Nutbush.
Growing up, she used to sing in the church choir at Nutbush’s Spring Hill Baptist Church.
She worked as a domestic worker for the Henderson family, in her teenage years. At 13, her father remarried and moved to Detroit.
After the sister reunited they went to live with their grandmother, where she attended Carver High School in Brownsville.
There, a self-professed tomboy, she became a member of both the cheerleading squad and the female basketball team.
After her grandmother died, Anne Mae moved with her mother in St. Louis where she reunited with her sister.
While there, she graduated from Summer High School, after which she worked as a nurse’s aide at a hospital. She always dreamt of becoming a nurse.
Her music career started in the mid- 1950s, as a featured singer with Ike Turner’s Kings of Rhythm. Her first recording came in 1958, under the name Little Ann.
She started using Tina Turner in 1960, while a member of the Ike & Tina Turner Revenue.
Immediate success followed with a series of hits signed by the duo, including A Fool in Love.
She married Ike Turner, and divorced him in 1978 because of the abuse he used against her. After the divorce she rebuilt her career through live performances.
A few years later she released a major comeback with another series of hits, beginning in the late 1983 with Let’s Stay Together. After which, followed the release of her fifth solo album Private Dance. The album had international success.
Today she is internationally recognized singer with many awards including eleven Grammy Awards.
She got Swiss citizenship in 2013 after relinquishing her American citizenship.
