Born in Brooklyn, New York City, he is the son of Lilian, a telephone operator and Charles Edward Murphy, a transit police officer and an amateur actor and comedian.
Growing up in the neighborhood of Bushwick, his father died and after his mother became ill, he and his brother went to live in foster care of one year.
