Born in Chicago, Illinois, to Fraser Robinson III, a city water plant employee, and Marian Shields Robinson, a secretary at Spiegel’s catalog store, she has an older brother.
Raised in a conventional home, her mother used to be a full-time homemaker until she started high school.
The family lived in a rented small apartment on the second floor from her great-aunt.
She attended Whitney Young High School, before joining a gifted class at Bryn Mawr Elementary School.
Her father multiple sclerosis had a profound emotional effect on her as she grew up.
Growing up, she became determined to stay out of trouble and be a good student, just like her father would want for her.
From a younger age she experienced gender discrimination, with many people rather than asking her for her opinion on a certain subject, people would ask her older brother.
On the honor roll for four years, taking advanced placement classes, the member of the National Honor Society, serving as a student council treasurer, she kept out of trouble, just like her father wanted.
In 1981 she graduated as the salutatorian of her class. Her brother inspired her to go to Princeton University from where he graduated in 1983.
Overwhelmed when first arriving in her first years because none of her parents went to college and that she had never spent time on a college campus, Michelle became more aware of her ethnicity while there.
While attending Princeton, she served as a member of the Third World Center, now known as Carl A. Fields Center, running their day care center, which also included after school tutoring.
Majoring in sociology and minored in African American studies, she graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in 1985.
In 1988 she earned her Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from the Harvard Law School.
While at Harvard she participated in demonstrations advocating the hiring of professors who were members of minorities. She also worked for the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau, assisting low-income tenants with housing cases.
She married the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama, in 1992, and together they have two children.
As First Lady, Obama became a fashion icon, a role model for women, and an advocate for poverty awareness, nutrition, physical activity, and healthy eating.
Today she remains the third First Lady with a postgraduate degree, after Hilary Clinton and Laura Bush.
