Derek Jeter is an American former professional baseball player and his current net worth is $190 million.
Born in Pequannock Township, New Jersey out of an Irish mother and an African American father. His parents, an accountant and a substance abuse counsellor, met while serving in the US Army in Germany.
His father instilled in him his love for the game, who played baseball at Fisk University in Tennessee as a shortstop. A positive attitude was instilled by his mother, teaching him that he can’t use the word ‘can’t’.
Derek’s younger sister, Sharlee, played softball in high school.
Derek and his family lived in New Jersey for the first four years of his life. They moved to Kalamazoo, Michigan, but the children spent their summers with their grandparents in New Jersey.
By attending New York Yankees games with his grandparents, Derek became a passionate fan of the team. He got inspired by Dave Winfield to pursue a career in baseball.
He went to Kalamazoo Central High School and got involved in sports every season. Cross country in the fall, basketball in the winter and baseball in the spring.
For the school team, he batted .557 in 10th grade, .508 in 11th and 12th grade.
How did Derek get famous?
After his senior season Derek received several honours, including All-State honourable mention and many more. This made him one of the best high school baseball players in Michigan.
His talent got him an offer for a baseball scholarship at the University of Michigan, to play for the Michigan Wolverines.
As a scout for Houston Astros, Hal Newhouser quit his job after the team didn’t pick Derek. That is how much Hal believed in his potential.
He ended up signing for $800,000 with the New York Yankees, after scout Dick Groch watched him play.
While playing for the Greensboro Hornets, he batted .247 in his first 11 games and struggled defensively. His scrawny appearance did not match his reputation, but he focused on his fielding in the offseason.
Baseball America rated him number 44 in the 100 best prospects in baseball before the ‘93 season.
He returned to the Hornets in 1993 and batted .295 with five home runs. Class A South Atlantic League managers named him Most Outstanding Major League Prospect.
In the next years he went from single-A to triple-A level teams and in 1996 he started as a shortstop for the Yankees on Opening Day. Derek became the first Yankee rookie to start as a shortstop since 1962. He hit his first Major League home run that day and batted .314 with 10 home runs in his rookie season.
MLB unanimously named him Rookie of the Year, only the fifth unanimous vote in the history of the award.
He played 20 season for the New York Yankees and won the World Series 5 times.
How does Derek make money?
For his 1997 and 1998 seasons he earned $540,000, respectively $750,000. Afterward, he signed a $189 million 10-year contract before the 2001 season with the Yankees.
In 2006 he was the second-highest paid baseball endorser and got ranked as the most marketable baseball player in 2003, 2005 and 2010 by Sports Business Surveys.
He had multiple movie, TV and video game appearances, including the movie The Other Guys, alongside Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg.
On July 10 2014, he became the fourth player to record his 1000th career multi-hit game.
Derek appeared in national ad campaigns for Gatorade, Nike, Ford, Visa, and Gillette to name a few. He endorsed an Avon cologne and has his own Jumpman show.
