Born in Tupelo, Mississippi as the son of Gladys Love and Vernon Elvis Presley in a house built by his father, he formed a close bond with both of his parents.
His family often relied on the help of their neighbors and government food assistance. Even though his family survived the F5 tornado in the 1936, they lost their home after his father kited a check written by the landowner.
Elvis’ father went to prison for eight months and him and his mother ended up moving with relatives.
He went to East Tupelo Consolidated for the first grade, where his teacher encouraged him to enter a singing contest.
He had his first public performance at the contest, held on 1945, dressed as a cowboy and placed fifth.
Some months later he received his first guitar for his birthday but had hoped for bicycle or a rifle.
In the next year his uncles gave him basic guitar lessons as well from the new pastor at the family’s church.
He went to a new school, Milam when he used to bring his guitar around with him on pretty much every day.
Elvis used to play the guitar and sang during lunchtime and other kids would often tease him as a “trashy” kid who played hillbilly music.
By that time his family lived in a largely African-American neighborhood, but moved to Memphis, Tennessee a few years later.
They received a two-bedroom apartment after residing for nearly a year in rooming houses.
Elvis went to L.C. Humes High School, where he received a C in music. After his teacher told him that he had no aptitude for singing, the next day little Elvis brought his guitar to prove him otherwise. He sang Keep Them Cold Icy Fingers Off Me.
A few years later he started taking serious guitar lessons from Jesse Lee Denson, one of his neighbors.
Along with few other friends, as well with Jesse Lee, they started a musical group that used to play around the Courts.
In his junior year, he showed signs that he was going to be different from his other classmates, mostly because of his looks.
Around that time he used to grew out his sideburns and styled his hair with rose oil and Vaseline.
He first started to record for RCA in 1956, along with a pianist, guitarist and three background singers that RCA enlisted.
From the brilliant session, the unusual Heartbreak Hotel released. They released the song as a single a few days later.
On the same year he made his first debut to national television on CBS’s Stage Show. After appearing for the first time, introduced by Bill Randle, he stayed in town to record more.
The sessions yielded eight songs, including a cover of Carl Perkins’ rockabilly anthem “Blue Suede Shoes”. In February, Presley’s “I Forgot to Remember to Forget”.
Today, years after his death ( August 16, 1977) he is still one of the best-selling artists of all times. He is often referred to as the “King of Rock and Roll”, or simply “the King”.
