Brooks traveled to Nashville to pursue a recording contract, with Phelps’ encouragement, including a list of his contacts in the city as well of some of his credit cards.

Phelps kept pushing him to return to Nashville, and he did. A few years later, he and his wife moved to Nashville, where he started making contacts in the music industry.

He released his first album in 1989 and quickly became a chart success. After that, only successful albums and singles followed.
