The positive feedback and the photo she took convinced her to take up modeling. As a result, she joined the Elite Model Management’s Look of the Year contest at 17 years old.
As one of the runner-ups, the modeling agency chose to represent her.
She finished DeKalb High School with a degree in valedictory and earned a scholarship to study chemical engineering at Northwestern University. She only went for one semester because she wanted to pursue a full-time modeling career.
Upon working with photographer Victor Skrebneski in Chicago, she moved to NYC and signed with the Elite New York modeling agency.

During the following years, she became one of the most popular supermodels and a ubiquitous presence on magazine covers, runways, and in fashion campaigns.
In this period many magazines including Vogue, W, People, and Cosmopolitan featured her repeatedly and frequently.
Throughout her career, she has walked for Chanel, Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, Christian Dior, among others.
She has also worked in films and appeared during the opening credits of The Secret of My Success.
Apart from that appearance, she made others including hosting the MTV’s House of Style until 1995.
However, she made her film debut as the lead female in the movie Fair Game, a commercial failure.
After she posed nude for Playboy magazine, her popularity increased and she started to rank highly on lists of the world’s sexiest people.
She also ranked #5 on Playboy’s list of the 100 sexiest stars of the 20th century as well as one of the 50 most beautiful people by People magazine.
