Queen Latifah is an American rapper, songwriter, singer, actress, model, television producer, record producer, and talk show host and her current net worth is $65 million.
Born in Newark, New Jersey, to Rita, a teacher and Lancelot Owens, Sr., a police officer, she lived primarily in East Orange, New Jersey.
Growing up she attended Essex Catholic Girls’ High School in Irvington, but didn’t graduate. Instead she went and graduated from Irvington High School.
After her parents divorced when she turned ten, she went to a catholic school because of her Baptist faith.
She even got her stage name, Latifah, which means delicate, and very kind, from an Arabic book of names she read at eight years old.
While a power forward on her high school basketball team, she also performed the number Home from the musical The Wiz.
Latifah started beat boxing for the hip-hop group Ladies Fresh as well as an original member of the Flavor Unit. At the time Flavor Unit became a crew of MCs who worked for producer DJ King Gemini.
The producer even made a demo recording of Latifah’s rap Princess of the Posse. After DJ King Gemini gave the record to the host of a show, it attracted the attention of Tommy Boy Music employee, who signed her right away.
After signing her, she released her first single “Wrath of My Madness”.

She made her name known out there by rapping about issues of black women. In her songs she covered all kind of subjects including domestic violence, and relationship problems.
After signing with Tommy Boy Records she recorded and released her first album “All Hail the Queen” in 1989.
During that period, at 19 years old, she also appeared as Referee on the UK label Music of Life album.
For her work she received a Candace Award for the National Coalition of 100 Black Women in 1992.
