Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, to her mother Ruth, a seamstress and housewife, and Fred Midler, housepainter, her parents named her after actress Bette Davis.

Born in Honolulu but raised in Aiea she attended Radford High School. In the 1961 school Hoss Election her colleagues voted her Most Talkative and Most Dramatic in her senior year.

She attended the University of Hawaii at Manoa where she majored in drama. While there she became a member of the Delta Phi Epsilon international sorority but left after three semesters.

While playing an un-credited seasick passenger named Miss Davis Buff she earned money in the 1966 film Hawaii.

After six weeks upon meeting Martin von Haselberg she married him in 1984. Together they had a daughter, Sophie von Haselberg, who is also an actress.

Using the money she earned from the film, she moved to New York City in the summer of 1965.

There she had her first professional role in Tom Eyen’s Off-Off-Broadway plays.

From 1966 to 1969, she played the role of Tzeitel in Fiddler on the Roof on Broadway. After which, she joined the original cast of Salvation in 1969.

She then started singing in the Continental Baths, a gay bathhouse in the Ansonia Hotel.

There she met her piano accompanist, Barry Manilow, who produced her first album, The Divine Miss M., in 1972.

During her time at Continental Baths she started to get popular.

She started in her first professional production of Who’s rock opera Tommy, with director Richard Pearlman.

During the run of Tommy she first appeared on The Tonight Show.

In 2008, she signed a contract with Caesars Palace in Las Vegas to perform a series of shows titled Bette Midler: The Showgirl Must Go On, which ended in January 2010.

She made her film debut in 1979 with The Rose, which gained her a Golden Globe.

In a career spanning almost half a century, Midler has won three Grammy Awards, four Golden Globes, three Emmy Awards, and a special Tony Award.

So far she has sold over 35 million records worldwide, with four Gold, three Platinum and three Multiplatinum albums.

Today she is starring on Broadway in the revival of Hello, Dolly! The show began on March 2017, and premiered in April the same year.

It is her first leading role in a Broadway musical.
