Mexican cartels like La Maña, Narcotraficantes, or simply known as Narcos in a generic term makes reference to several, usually rival, criminal organizations involved in the Mexican Drug War.

From the kingpin Tony Montana who went down in Brian de Palma’s gonzo crime classic film Scarface, to Pablo Escobar, most drug dealers are killed by rival cartels.

But among them all, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman is still an active drug kingpin and is on the run.

He was named by the DEA, the ‘godfather of the drug world’, and is the leader of the Sinaloa cartel. Until now he has captured twice, but also escaped from prison twice.

These are just the few stories that surround the Mexican drug cartels. They are also responsible for many deaths and disappearances each year.

Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo, “El Padrino”, was a former Mexican Judicial Federal Police agent, is believed to have been the godfather of the Mexican drug trade, which started in the 80s.

El Chapo then entered the drug trade at an early age, selling marijuana and opium poppy to survive.

Then in the 70s, he was working for Héctor Luis Palma Salazar, the then-head of the Guadalajara Cartel. El Chapo rose amongst the ranks, became known as a ruthless pragmatist and savvy businessman.

He, along with Palma and a drug trafficker named Ismael Zambada García, formed the Sinaloa cartel, and has grown since into a billion-dollar organization.
