The students won NASA’s recent competition after they designed commercially viable accommodation for low-Earth orbit. The team from Massachusetts Institute of Technology came with the best design.
As soon as Elon Musk breaks into space, this hotel will be possible. He recently announced his plan to send two space tourists around the moon on his SpaceX rocket by 2018.
Let me tell you that there are tons of businesses who try to fly tourists into space, but as soon as any of them succeeds, there will be a luxury hotel in space.
Why they won?
The team at MIT came through the challenge involving creating a habitable module that will be extensible for future use as a MARS transit vehicle.
Called Managed, Reconfigurable, In-space Nodal Assembly or short MARINA has respected NASA’s instructions accordingly. The accommodation it features a luxury hotel as the primary anchor tenant. As a co-anchor tenant that is NASA.
What about the costs?
NASA estimates that the hotel will require around $360 million per year. That represents an significant reduction from the current costs of maintaining and operating the International Space Station.
Hence, with these costs, NASA is looking to save approximately 16 percent of its overall budget, which is around $3 billion per year.

MARINA team lead Matthew Moraguez, explained that MARINA’s key engineering innovations include extensions to the IDSS interface.

“Same as a yacht, MARINA can provide all essential services, including safe harbor, reliable power, clean water and air, and efficient logistics and maintenance,” said Lordos.
