Born in Wichita, Kansas as the third of four sons of Mary Clementine, and Fred Chase Koch, a chemical engineer, his elder brothers are: Frederick R. Koch, Charles Koch, and nineteen-minute younger twin, Bill Koch.

Growing up he attended Deerfield Academy prep school in Massachusetts, from which he graduated in 1959. He attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

There he earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in chemical engineering.

While at MIT he played basketball averaging 21 points per game over three years, making it a school record.

The member of the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity held the single-game scoring of 41 points from 1962 to 2009, when Jimmy Bartolotta broke it again.

He joined Koch Industries in 1970, under his brother Charles, to work as a technical-service manager.

Nine years later he established the company’s New York office and became the president of his own division, Koch Engineering.

As of 2010, he owns 42% of Koch Industries, just like his older brother Charles.

David Koch is the holder of 4 United States patents.

Apart from his business career, David is also a philanthropist, and has created several foundations like the David H. Koch Charitable Foundation.

In 1992, doctors diagnosed him with prostate cancer and underwent radiation, surgery and hormone therapy since then. The cancer returned every time.

He used to say that his experience with cancer has encouraged him to start and fund medical research.

Between 1998 and 2012, he has donated at least $395 million to medical research causes and intuitions.

He has contributed with $41 million to Prostate Cancer Foundation, as well as being on the Board of Directors.

Apart from contributing to the medical research of cancer, he has given a total of $185 million to MIT since he joined the MIT Corporation in 1988.

Through the years he has made several contributions to education as well as several charities and institutions.
