John Paul DeJoria is an American entrepreneur, a self-made billionaire and his current net worth is $3.2 billion.
Born in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, California as the second son of an Italian immigrant father and a Greek immigrant mother, he grew up in Atwater Village.
When he turned two years old, his parents divorced. At nine years old he started selling Christmas cards and newspapers with his older brother to make money for their family.
Along with his brother, he grew up in Atwater Village on Garden Avenue and then Revere. While there he attended Atwater Elementary School as well as John Marshall High School.
Because their single mother couldn’t provide for them anymore, the boys were sent to an East Los Angeles foster home.
Before graduating from high school in 1962 he used to be a member of a street gang. However, after his high school math teacher said that he would never succeed at anything in life, he decided to change his life.
Four years later, after his then wife abandoned him and their two year old son and took the rent money and the only car they owned, they had to live on the street.
That became the first time, but not the only time, DeJoria became homeless.
Later, after spending two years in the United States Navy, he returned home and started to work various jobs like janitor, door-to-door encyclopedia salesman, among others.
How did John Paul DeJoria get famous?
He first entered the world of hair care as an employee of Redken Laboratories. After he became unemployed, along with hairdresser, Paul Mitchel, he started John Mitchell Systems. During that time he took a loan of $700 to start the company, while still living in a 20-year-old Rolls Royce automobile.
How does John Paul DeJoria make money?
A few years later he co-founded Patron Spirits Company. Today he serves as the founding partner of the House of Blues nightclub chain, as well as having interests in many other companies.
Among those companies are: Madagascar Oil Ltd., Pyrat Rum, Smokey Mountain Bison Farm, llc, Ultimat Vodka, Solar Utility, Sun King Solar, Touchstone Natural Gas, Three Star Energy, Diamond Audio, a Harley-Davidson dealership, a diamond company (DeJoria), mobile technology developer ROK AMERICAS, the John Paul Pet Company.
Apart from his business career he is an active member of the film industry and serves as an executive producer and actor.
He made a cameo appearance as himself, in the You Don’t Mess with the Zohan, among others.
In 2013 he appeared on the ABC reality series Shark Tank as a guest investor, replacing Robert Herjavec.
Currently he is the 2nd richest Shark of all time on the show, after Mark Cuban.
As of his personal life, he is married to Eloise and has four children.
But DeJoria is also a philanthropist and has donated millions to different charities.
In 2008, DeJoria traveled to sub-Saharan Africa to join Nelson Mandela in his efforts to help feed orphaned children through Food4Africa. He is a supporter of Food4Africa, Mineseeker, and Blazer House.
In the same year his company Paul Mitchell helped provide over 400,000 life-saving meals for the children. He co-created Grow Appalachia, an organization which helps promote healthy food and teaching farming skills.
