His parents, who were both painters, had met at painting classes of Hans Hofmann in Massachusetts, got divorced when Robert was only two years old, after his father came out as gay.
He went to a public elementary school in Manhattan, until the sixth grade, and then went to a private school for the seventh and eighth grades.
Got into the High School of Art for the ninth grade, but went just for a short time before transferring to a public high school.
He then went to transfer from one school to another, until he ended up graduating from neither.
After he played the Cowardly Lion in a school production of The Wizard of Oz, he became fixed on cinema, and dropped out of school to pursue an acting career.
He then went to study acting at Stella Alder Conservatory, as well as Lee Strasberg’s Actors Studio.
De Niro made his film debut in Brian De Palma’s film, The Wedding Party, when he was just 20 years old.
In 1970 he starred in Bloody Mama, but became famous because of his role as dying Major League Baseball player in Bang the Drum Slowly (1973).
The doors were opened for him, and after that more and more roles came, including a crucial one in The Godfather Part II (1974), when he played the young Vito Corleone.
The director, Francis Ford Coppola, remembered that De Niro had auditioned for Sonny Corleone, Michael Corleone, and other key characters from the film, and got him to offer the role of young Vito Corleone.
Thanks to his brilliant performance he won his first Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, but he wasn’t present at the ceremony to accept the award, instead Coppola did it for him.
He went on and collaborated again with director Martin Scorsese, with whom he worked in Mean Streets, this time for the successful Taxi Driver (1976).
Their collaboration went on with more films such as New York, New York (1977), Raging Bull (1980), The King of Comedy (1983), Goodfellas (1990), just to name a few.
Taxi Driver was the most successful and important for the actor’s career. Thanks to his iconic performance as Travis Bickle, he earned his first Academy Award for Best Actor, which got De Niro up on the list of the famous actors.
De Niro also directed and starred in crime drama A Bronx Tale (1993), and the spy film The Good Shepherd (2006).
In 2006, he got an Italian passport and the Prime Minister, on behalf of the Italian Republic, granted him his Italian citizenship.
Years later after his career started, De Niro keeps starring in movies, and is one of the most bankable actors.
