Born in Kansas City, Missouri, to Irma M. his mother, an amateur painter and songwriter, and Mark Bertram Bacharach, a famous syndicated newspaper columnist, he grew up in Forest Hills section on NYC.

In 1946 he graduated from Forest Hills High School. As a teenager he started showing a particular interest in jazz, disliking piano lessons.

He would often use a fake ID to enter to 52nd Street nightclubs to see musicians like Dizzy Gillespie and Count Basie performing.

Bacharach attended Montreal’s McGill University under Helmut Blume. Also went to Mannes School of Music and the Music Academy of the West in Montecito, California.

There he studied music and graduated from Montreal’s McGill University in 1948, with a Bachelor of Music.

Today he is a 6-time Grammy Award winner, as well as 3-time Academy Award winner. More than 1,000 different artists recorded his songs.

After his and David’s songs became popular, he went to write hits for other artists such as Gene Pitney, Tom Jones, and many more.
